Inventory before designing
Document hosts, applications, volumes or file systems, protocols, capacity, performance, multipathing, replication, snapshots, backup dependencies, and business owners. Hidden dependencies are one of the biggest migration risks.
Define success and rollback
Specify acceptable downtime, validation criteria, RPO/RTO, cutover ownership, and the exact point at which rollback is no longer practical. A migration plan without a tested rollback decision is incomplete.
Choose the data-movement method deliberately
Array replication, host-based copy, hypervisor migration, file copy, and application-native methods have different outage, performance, and consistency characteristics. Match the method to the workload rather than forcing one tool across every dataset.
Test representative workloads
Pilot with workloads that represent the real protocols, capacity, performance, and application dependencies. Validate not only data arrival but permissions, paths, mounts, application behavior, backups, monitoring, and recovery.
Control the cutover
Use a timed runbook with owners, prerequisites, go/no-go criteria, validation steps, communications, and rollback checkpoints. Record actual timings during the first migrations to improve later waves.
